Sampling

The selection of only a subset of events, traces, records, or measurements for collection or retention to control overhead and storage cost.

Observability Context

Sampling keeps only a subset of traces, events, or records to control telemetry overhead and storage. Head sampling decides near the start of an operation, while tail sampling can wait until a trace is complete and retain it according to outcomes such as errors or high latency.

Statistical Boundary

Less data does not always preserve the same information. A poor sampling strategy can hide rare failures, distort distributions, or make incident correlation difficult, so the policy should reflect the workload and intended analysis.
