Bind Variable
A placeholder in an Oracle SQL statement whose runtime value is supplied separately, promoting statement reuse and reducing hard parsing when used appropriately.
Oracle Runtime Context
Oracle bind variables separate SQL text from runtime values, allowing compatible statements to share parsed cursors and reducing hard-parse pressure when the application reuses SQL consistently. They are also the normal parameterization mechanism behind prepared statements.
Optimizer Boundary
Binding values does not solve every selectivity problem. Highly skewed data can require different execution plans for different values, so cursor sharing and adaptive behavior must be considered alongside injection safety and parse cost.
