METU: Effects of Brain and Neuroscience Research on Learning and Education
2021
I attended Assoc. Prof. Fırat Soylu’s METU session on brain research, neuroscience, learning and education.
Date: 2021-05-10
Speakers: Doç. Dr. Fırat Soylu
Conference Scope
On 10 May 2021, I followed Assoc. Prof. Fırat Soylu’s presentation on the effects of brain and neuroscience research on learning and education. The topic connected research in cognitive neuroscience with questions arising in educational practice.
Brain, Body and Learning
Learning involves perception, motor activity and interactions with the environment, as well as abstract reasoning. Embodied cognition provides one framework for studying how sensorimotor experiences may contribute to conceptual learning.
Evolutionary and Cultural Context
Biological development and cultural experience should be considered together. Differences observed in educational performance cannot be reliably reduced to one neural measure, and the transfer of laboratory findings to educational settings requires attention to sampling, measurement and context.
Educational Technology and Research Limits
Correlations in brain activity do not by themselves establish that one teaching method is superior. Similar methodological care is needed when assessing AI-assisted educational tools.
