An ASR accuracy metric that measures character-level substitutions, deletions, and insertions relative to reference text.

Speech Processing Context

Character Error Rate measures substitutions, deletions, and insertions at character level relative to the number of reference characters. It complements WER for short strings, names, identifiers, and languages or tasks where word boundaries are less stable.

Evaluation Boundary

Unicode normalization, punctuation policy, case folding, whitespace treatment, and other text normalization must be fixed before systems are compared; otherwise CER differences can reflect scoring policy rather than recognition quality.
