PCM

Turkish equivalent: Darbe kod modülasyonuDomain: Signal Processing

Pulse-code modulation, a direct digital representation of sampled signal amplitude values at a defined sample rate, bit depth, and channel layout.

Signal Representation

Pulse-Code Modulation represents sampled amplitudes as numeric values. Sample rate, bit depth, signedness, byte order, and channel layout determine how a PCM byte stream is interpreted; signed 16-bit mono PCM at 16 kHz is a common intermediate representation in speech-processing pipelines.

Conceptual Boundary

PCM is not a compression codec and is not itself a file container. Containers such as WAV can carry PCM together with metadata that describes its representation.

Deterministic Time Axis in PCM Processing

In PCM processing, media time is derived from the number of samples processed per channel rather than the wall clock. The same counter keeps stereo frames, partial reads, and segment boundaries on one time axis.

Decoding GSM WAV Files with Java

Java processing of telephony WAV files must distinguish the WAV container from its codec, correctly decode A-law, mu-law, or PCM, and only then prepare audio for VAD or ASR.

Developing a Voice Activity Detection Library

Production VAD is more than an energy threshold; PCM framing, noise modeling, decision smoothing, channel ownership, and the segment state machine jointly determine latency and accuracy.
