Partitioning
The division of a logical data set into smaller physical or logical segments based on a partitioning key or rule.
Database Context
Partitioning divides one logical data set according to a key or rule. Local table partitioning can support partition pruning, retention, and maintenance, while distributed partitioning also determines which node owns a piece of data.
Scaling Boundary
More partitions do not automatically produce more throughput. Skew, cross-partition access, metadata overhead, and the cost of repartitioning must be measured against the workload.
