A retry-delay strategy that increases waiting time exponentially after repeated failures to reduce pressure on an unhealthy dependency.
Resilience Context
Exponential backoff increases retry delay after repeated failures, often approximately as b * 2^n until a cap or deadline is reached. It reduces repeated pressure on an unhealthy dependency and gives recovery time between attempts.
Synchronization Boundary
Deterministic backoff can cause many clients that failed together to retry together again. Jitter is therefore commonly added so recovery traffic is spread over time.
