Decompilation
The reconstruction of higher-level source-like representations from compiled machine code or bytecode, necessarily losing some original source information.
Reverse-Engineering Context
Decompilation reconstructs higher-level, source-like structure from bytecode or machine code using type inference, SSA, control-flow structuring, and data-flow analysis. Managed bytecode often retains more metadata than a stripped native binary and can therefore support a richer reconstruction.
Inference Boundary
Decompiled output is an interpretation, not recovery of the original source. Variable names, comments, exact control structure, macros, and source formatting may be irretrievably lost.
